Lucca Farmers' Market
The 19th-century spaces of the Foro Boario host Lucca's first farmers' market, held every Saturday and, during the summer months, also every Wednesday.
Just steps from the river park, the farmers' market is a great place to stock up on supplies before a bike ride with a picnic, or to try your hand at local cuisine.
There are around twenty local farmers selling all kinds of food, including a stall selling fresh fish from nearby Versilia and a flower stall whose seasonal produce is a must-have for a cheerful and inviting table.
The farmers' market is the best place to find typical, traditional, and local produce, especially seasonal ones. It also offers plenty of advice and recipes directly from the producers and locals who frequent this type of market.
The Lucca area's short supply chain is well represented by this market, which boasts high-quality products. It's an opportunity for consumers and producers to meet directly, promoting well-being through the sale of premium, strictly zero-mile products.
Here in winter you can find the legendary "rapini" not to be confused with turnip tops and "gobbi", in spring the "barbe di prete" and also the wild herbs to prepare the legendary zuppa di magro, the asparagine and the first artichokes for the "garmugia", in summer the juicy canestrino tomato "slow food presidium" like the "rosso di Lucca" bean for which you have to wait until the beginning of autumn.
To complete the table, fresh and mature cheeses and ricotta for the “gnudi”, honey, cured meats and, ça va sans dire, the wines of the Lucca hills, fresh whites and full-bodied reds to accompany the dishes and the excellent extra virgin olive oil that goes with everything!

An experience to enjoy during a longer stay, to then try your hand at the local cuisine, or a quick stop if you want to take a bit of Lucca home with you, is shopping at the farmers' market in Piazza San Francesco, a quiet and private corner of the city just steps from the characteristic Via del Fosso, the Villa Bottini park and the Botanical Garden, and the Lu.CCA contemporary art center.
The market, run by twelve young producers, is part of the CIA's "Countryside Shopping" network and Slow Food's Earth Markets, which periodically organizes meetings on the theme of "Good, Clean, and Fair" food. It's a small market, but it has it all.
Seasonality, biodiversity, and plenty of great advice on Lucca cuisine are at home here, provided directly by producers and the locals who gather here to exchange recipes and discover what the season has in store in a lively and "tasty" atmosphere.
The basket features the finest seasonal produce—gobbi, turnip, pumpkin, and zucchini—as well as Slow Food Presidia products such as the Lucca Canestrino tomato, Lucca red bean, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh fruit; raw-milk sheep, cow, and goat cheeses; cured meats and fresh Cinta Senese pork; flour, bread, and baked goods; wine from the Lucca hills; and honey. All strictly organic.
A few unscheduled treats are also included, such as sweetened olives for stewed chicken and rabbit, tea from the Monte Pisano nurseries for an afternoon snack, freshly roasted peanuts straight from the Massaciuccoli fields, May cherries, the inimitable porchetta for a local-style snack, Genny's fresh eggs, artichoke liqueur, and, if you're lucky, a few sumptuous bunches of camellias in full bloom.

The Market Exhibition “Arts and Crafts" is the first open-air artisan market in Lucca's historic center. A large group of exhibitors have gathered since 1988 on the last weekend of the month, showcasing a wide range of original and traditional products. The market is located in Piazza San Giusto, in the heart of the old town, adjacent to the Piazzetta del Libro, a "Parisian" corner where lovers of print can find out-of-print books and vintage prints.
Ceramicists, painters, sculptors, leather, glass, and papier-mâché masters, weavers, jewelers, cabinetmakers, seamstresses, embroiderers, and masters of knitting and crochet are the artists and artisans who enliven the Arts and Crafts market with their creations.
Wandering among the stalls, you'll find colorful animals, stars, and suns, notebooks and bookmarks made from traditional Viareggio papier-mâché, clothing accessories made from recycled leather, and jewelry made from a wide variety of stones and molten metals, as well as clay and terracotta furnishings crafted with meticulous attention to detail.
The Lucca Arts and Crafts market is organized by the Lucca Arts and Crafts Association, which has always been committed to preserving and promoting the creativity of people who, with passion and ingenuity, dedicate themselves to creating unique pieces. About fifty carefully selected exhibitors are always available for direct contact with the public, promoting the development and awareness of artistic and manual activities.

Antiques market
In the 15th century, the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck painted a portrait of the Arnolfini couple, merchants from Lucca, in a painting that was destined to become famous.
Lucca's antiques tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, when noble families who toured the markets of Europe with their precious fabrics sought exclusive pieces to enrich their homes.
The Antiques Market is of more recent origin, founded in 1970, but has quickly become an unmissable event on the Italian scene.
During market days, a peaceful invasion of objects from times gone by spreads across the squares near the cathedral, all the way to the churches of San Giovanni and San Giusto. Along the narrow streets stand stalls overflowing with lace and embroidery, crystal jugs, silver cutlery, statues, precious ceramic vases, wooden ladders, chandeliers, jewelry, and bolts of antique fabric, card tables and folding chairs, accordions and incense, enormous paintings and tiny buttons, bottles and glasses of every shape, and so on and so forth.
With more than 200 exhibitors from all over Italy, Lucca's antiques market is considered one of the most important in the country, not only for the wealth of items on display but also for the extraordinary symbiosis between the stalls and the city's streets and squares. The heart of the market is Via del Battistero, which remains the "street of antique dealers" and exclusive shops selling furniture and artistic crafts year-round.
Even the cafes here are galleries where you can enjoy excellent dishes and admire works of art.

Weekly market
In Lucca, the weekly market is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 8:00 am to 13:00 pm in Piazzale Don Baroni, near the river park, which can be reached by exiting Porta Santa Maria and walking along a convenient sidewalk. In Ponte a Moriano, it's held on Tuesdays in Piazza del Popolo, at the same time.
Plenty of stalls to browse for that must-have blouse or vintage trousers to create your own unique look, romantic yet timeless grandma's lace, and bright necklaces to liven up simple dresses, cargo pants for an adventurous look, and, in winter, warm, hand-knitted, technical fleece or wool sweaters, as beautiful as ever, to pair with technical mountain boots.
And then, in every season, the "sale-everything" of shops and designer labels at unbeatable prices.
There's also a dedicated food market, where you can have a picnic basket prepared with porchetta sandwiches or tasty cheeses from the Garfagnana mountains, along with fresh seasonal fruit. You can then continue along the river park, which is easily accessed via a signposted path right next to the market.
As in every market, there's a space for flowers, both cut and potted, a fresh and colorful space in every season where you can choose plants from the nurseries of nearby Versilia, from domestic roses to exotic passionflowers. You can ask for advice on a beautiful bouquet for your partner.
Finally, the "never-without" stalls offering a variety of everyday items. Kitchen utensils, pots and pans of all sizes, all strictly in red or white enamel, rugs, cushions, curtains, and tablecloths for every type of decor, and, for those who enjoy DIY, fabrics and haberdashery.

Saint Zita She is the patron saint of housewives and maids, and was herself a maid for the wealthy Fatinelli family.
Tradition has it that, perhaps because she was jealous of Zita's affection, another Fatinelli maid began to insinuate into the head of the family the suspicion that Zita was stealing the things she donated to the poor. One day, the master, encountering Zita with her apron full while on her way to a needy family, asked her what she was carrying. Despite the bread being full, Zita replied that she was carrying only flowers and branches. When she undid her apron, the flowers and branches fell out.
The week of April 27th takes place in Lucca, at the Basilica of San Frediano and the amphitheatre, a floral display in honor of Saint Zita, designed to commemorate the miracle of the loaves transformed into flowers.
His body, preserved in the Basilica of San Frediano, is exposed during the feast day for offerings and vows.
A great celebration in the city to mark the anniversary of the death of the saint of flowers, symbol of virtuous Lucca, who died on April 27, 1272 and is mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy. Dante, referring to a magistrate of Lucca, speaks of the elder of Saint Zita, thus identifying Lucca with the saint remembered in the Divine Comedy.
The event includes the flower market in Piazza Anfiteatro and, during the days of the festival, small gardens are set up in the surrounding squares.
Via Fillungo, Piazza Scalpellini, and Piazza San Frediano are filled with color, and the atmosphere is filled with the intense scent of flowers, sweets, and local food and wine.
In addition, the floral displays by Opera delle Mura and the gardeners of the Botanical Garden will also be created in Piazza S. Frediano and Piazza Scalpellini.
