Mercato Antiquario

In the 15th century, the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck painted a portrait of the Arnolfinis, a couple of merchants from Lucca, without knowing how famous this painting would have become later.
The antiquarian tradition of Lucca came up in the Middle Ages when the noble families who travelled around the European markets with their precious fabrics used to purchase exclusive furnishings to decorate their homes.

The Antiques Market is more recent, since it was first organized in 1920, but it has quickly become an unmissable appointment in Lucca.

In the days of the market, a peaceful invasion of objects from other times spreads through the squares near the cathedral, up to the churches of San Giovanni and San Giusto. In the narrow streets you can find stands full of lace, crystal jugs, silver cutlery, statues, vases in precious ceramics, wooden ladders, chandeliers, jewels and pieces of ancient fabrics, game tables and folding chairs, accordions and incense, huge paintings and tiny buttons, bottles and glasses of all shapes, and much more ...

The antiques market of Lucca with more than 200 exhibitors from all over Italy, is considered one of the most important markets in Italy, not only for the great selection of objects on display but also for its extraordinary setting in the streets and squares of the city. The central part of the market is located in via del Battistero, called "via degli Antiquari" all year round for the presence of exclusive furniture and art crafts shops.

The cafes in this area are also galleries where you can enjoy excellent food and admire works of art.
