The territory on which Lucca lies is a drained alluvial plain.

Of its nature, we have a small but interesting network of natural oases, treasure troves of biodiversity, which can be visited in different ways, and some areas not covered by integral protection but interesting from a naturalistic point of view, such as Il Padule di Verciano (The Verciano Wetland).
Changing seasons, changing colours, temperatures, flavours, large monumental trees, wetlands, forests... small and large systems that always offer great sensory and emotional experiences.

The first reclamation of the Piana di Lucca is attributed to the Roman founders of the city.
Several routes still follow the traces of the centuriation, and in the Municipality of Porcari a major archaeological discovery has brought to light what is called the park of the 100 Roman farms.
The archaeological area is located in the middle of the wetlands, not far from the fields where Lucca beans are produced in the rural area.

In addition to the important work of containing Serchio River, Lorenzo Nottolini is best known for another engineering work that we can consider a monument in the Piana di Lucca.

The aqueduct built in the 19th century to supply the city with fresh water from Monte Pisano is still functioning. The straight line of the construction runs through the countryside, while in the upstream part, in the area of the springs, the landscaping is softer and more appropriate to the natural context in which it is built.
Its proper function is accompanied by the interest of the trail by those seeking paths for easy walks not far from the historic center of Lucca.
