Lucca Magical Christmas
Enchanting atmospheres in the heart of the city
In Lucca, Christmas is an enveloping and enchanting experience. The city transforms into a suspended landscape, where the charm of the historic center meets the magic of lights, traditions, and events for adults and children alike.
“Lucca Magical Christmas” it is the widespread project that, for the whole month of December and until Epiphany, lights up the city with a rich calendar of initiatives, markets, shows, exhibitions and unique atmospheres that involve the centre and the neighbourhoods.
A fairytale atmosphere
Strolling along the walls, crossing the illuminated squares, being enchanted by the decorated shop windows, listening to the sounds of a Christmas choir: in Lucca, every corner is bathed in poetry.
The tree-lined avenues become natural settings for artistic luminaries, light installations and small outdoor shows. The facades of historic buildings come alive with videomapping, projections and visual games that tell Christmas stories, Lucca legends and messages of hope.
Markets, flavors and crafts
Among the most popular initiatives, the Christmas markets With wooden huts, artisanal products, food and wine specialties, gift ideas, and locally designed objects, Lucca also becomes a place to experience the authenticity of a Tuscan Christmas, including traditional sweets, mulled wine, and hot chocolate.
Events for everyone

There is no shortage of moments linked to tradition: the Befana in the square, artistic nativity scenes, the performances of the town bands and the Christmas choirs.
Luca in Mask
The city between celebration, colors and tradition
In the most playful and theatrical period of the year, Lucca dresses up in joy and creativity with Lucca in Mask, the widespread calendar of initiatives that celebrates Carnival through events, shows and activities designed for all ages.

The heart of the party
Piazza San Francesco and the historic center become the fulcrum of the celebrations: here one follows the other costume parades, outdoor games, theatrical and musical performances. creative workshops for children and teenagers they stimulate imagination and manual skills, with the creation of masks, puppets, scenic elements and disguises.
The active involvement of the schools, libraries and local cultural realities transforms Lucca into a large open-air laboratory, where masks are not just symbols of celebration, but tools for reflection, socialization, and inclusion.
Tradition and innovation
Alongside the more traditional Carnival celebrations, Lucca in Maschera offers themed tours and cultural events to discover the origins of Carnival, its historical masks, and its connection to popular culture, as well as to explore new artistic languages and creative approaches.
Tradition and History
Santa Zita Spring Festival
The days of Saint Paulinus
Lucca Historiae Fest
Santa Zita Spring Festival
She rests all year round inside the Basilica of San Frediano, in a side chapel where large frescoes tell her story. She is Santa Zita, the saint of flowers, to whom so many devotees around the world are grateful, and in Lucca there is a festive atmosphere.
history
The people of Lucca love to tell the story of the kindly maid unjustly accused out of envy. One day, Mr. Fatinelli, for whom she worked, encountered Zita with her apron full on while on her way to a needy family. He asked her what she was carrying. It was full of bread, but Zita replied that she was only bringing flowers and branches to the Madonna, which fell, untying her apron. She died in 1278, and the people of Lucca ordered her remains to be buried in the Basilica of San Frediano. Her mummified body is displayed in the Fatinelli Chapel of the Basilica of San Frediano in Lucca and, during these holidays, in the center of the church.
Saint Zita of Lucca She was already so revered in Tuscany that Dante Alighieri cited her in the Divine Comedy shortly after her death, referring to a magistrate of Lucca known as "the elder of Saint Zita," thus identifying the little flower saint with honest and vistuous Lucca. Her memory has always remained linked to that miracle of flowers, and every year in her honor, a large garden is set up in the Piazza Anfiteatro for a market fair. Blessed daffodils are offered, a symbol of empathy that brings good luck and happiness, like the first flowers to bloom and herald spring.
The Gardens of Santa Zita
Flowerbeds will be in full bloom for the feast of Santa Zita, linked to the traditional flower market that will take place in Piazza dell'Anfiteatro from April 24th to 28th for five days dedicated to the patron saint of Lucca.
Are the Gardens of Santa Zita which, to the classic city itineraries, add a "temporary" one among the ten locations in the city where flowerbeds and floral decorations have been set up, bringing the spirit of spring and tradition to the historic center of Lucca for the city's oldest flower festival.
A special, spring-like appearance graced Piazza San Frediano, Piazza Antelminelli, Piazza Scarpellini, Piazza Cittadella, and Piazzale Verdi, while pots of azaleas and rhododendrons were placed at the Pozzo di Santa Zita in Via Fontana, at the monument to Maria Luisa of Bourbon in Piazza Napoleone, at Porta dei Borghi, and in the squares of the Basilicas of San Frediano, San Giovanni, and San Cristoforo. These were laid out by the gardeners of the Botanical Garden, Lucca's 19th-century scientific garden, whose greenhouses provide the plants in Piazza Scarpellini and some of those in the flowerbed at San Frediano.
The market exhibition
In Piazza Anfiteatro, instead, It is celebrated with the traditional flower and sweets market exhibition and shops decorated with plants and flowerpots during the fair days.
In the streets, the scent of flowers blends with that of the herb cakes prepared in the homes.
Those with a sweet tooth will be able to take advantage of the opportunity to taste the herb cake, the traditional cake of Saint Zita, much loved by the people of Lucca. A mixture of chard, stale bread, spices, and cheese, gathered in a shortcrust pastry and decorated with the traditional diamond shapes and characteristic "becchi."
The bell of Santa Zita
The centerpiece of all religious events is, of course, the Basilica of San Frediano. One of the bells, designed by Giovanni Pisano, is also dedicated to her. Cast in 1223, it is the only surviving bell from the ancient set of bells that rang, along with the others, at the death of Saint Zita. A historical relic and also a relic linked to the saint's life, as it spontaneously announced her Dies Natalis, as has been handed down through the centuries, in a festive double ring with the other bells, without the intervention of the bell ringers.
The unused bell inside the basilica welcomes the public at the base of the bell tower of San Frediano. This bell, cast by Pisano in 1223, was scanned in recent years to cast a new, identical one, thus restoring the ancient "double of San Frediano." It was blessed in 2020 and then placed in the bell tower, beginning to ring on April 25, 2021, at the beginning of the annual feast of Saint Zita. April 25th marks the beginning of the triduum in preparation for the liturgical feast of Saint Zita, and in the afternoon, the bell ringers of Lucca perform the ancient and famous ringing of the bells of San Frediano in festive doubles.
The days of Saint Paulinus
Tradition, devotion, and historical reenactment in the heart of Lucca
Lucca celebrates its patron saint, Saint Paulinus, with a series of solemn, spectacular events deeply linked to the memory and identity of the city. The celebrations focus on the figure of Paulinus of Lucca, Roman bishop and, according to tradition, the first bishop of the city, whose devotion developed following the discovery of the relics in the church of San Giorgio, during the construction of the second circle of walls.
According to legend, San Paolino is attributed a saving miracleAn accidental artillery shell, fired during the celebrations, hit a crowd of worshippers entering through Porta San Donato. No one was injured. This extraordinary event is still remembered today in one of the most heartfelt ceremonies.
Tradition is renewed
During the so-called Days of St. Paulinus, the historic center comes alive with events that blend spirituality, historical reenactment and entertainmentThe celebrations include:
-
Historical parades in costume, with musicians, flag-wavers, crossbowmen and extras from the three ancient city districts (San Paolino, San Salvatore, San Martino), who cross the city accompanied by drums and clarions.
-
La Luminara of San Paolino, an evocative night procession that starts from the church dedicated to the Saint and passes through the streets of the center, culminating in a blessing ceremony and the drawing of the shooting order for the Palio della Balestra.
-
La Parade of Flags, in which historical groups demonstrate the art of flag-waving, creating spectacular choreographies in Piazza San Martino.
-
La Artillery uproar, with blank shots fired from historical reproductions of cannons, in memory of the miraculous intervention of the Saint.
The Crossbow Palio
The highlight of the celebrations is the Crossbow Palio, which takes place at night in the suggestive setting of San Martin SquareThe crossbowmen of the three thirds challenge each other using bench crossbows to hit a target at a distance of 36 meters. The competition, regulated by a judging panel, awards prizes to the best shooter and to the winning third, who receives the Palio, a banner painted by a local artist.
In addition to the competition, the evening is enriched by jester shows, historical dances and flag games, which provide the backdrop to the competition, offering the public a complete immersion in the medieval atmosphere.
Experiences and convivial moments
In addition to the main celebrations, the Days of San Paolino also offer convivial and cultural opportunities: markets, tastings of typical products, concerts of sacred, ancient or band music, and numerous initiatives spread throughout the streets of the historic center, particularly along Via San Paolino.

Lucca Comics & Games
Lucca Film Festival
Lucca Comics & Games
Every year, between late October and early November, the city transforms for five days. But do you know the history of this event?
Lucca is the city of Lucca Comics & Games! Medieval streets, 19th-century squares, hidden courtyards, shady loggias, fantastical towers, mysterious palaces, and splendid Renaissance walls welcome the comic book community once again this year.
the “Pallone” of the early 70s
This is how the people of Lucca remember the first editions of Lucca Comics, a large white tent, “the balloon”, which hosted the comics fair in “Piazza Grande” from 1966 to 1978.
Years in which comics had a specific weight in Italian popular culture: Corto Maltese, Tex Willer, Valentina, Sturmtruppen, Alan Ford, Diabolik, Zagor, Kriminal, Lupo Alberto, Cocco Bill, Ken Parker are just some of the many Italian comics born between the sixties and seventies.
Lucca Comics immediately became the go-to event for the world of "talking clouds," and to the delight of both adults and children, all the great heroes of this fantastic world passed through our beautiful Tuscan city: Hugo Pratt, Magnus, Bonvi, the Giussani sisters, Max Bunker, Milo Manara, Sergio Bonelli, Sergio Staino, Jacovitti, Dino Battaglia, Altan, and Guido Crepax.
From the “Pallone” to the “Palazzetto”
From the 80s until 2006, the Palazzetto dello Sport became the venue for the fair, with some memorable editions and, above all, always with the presence of the elite of Italian and international comics, joined by Andrea Pazienza, Stefano Tamburini, and new proposals from Bonelli Editore such as Dylan Dog by Tiziano Sclavi.
Lucca Comics & Games arrives in town
Since 2006, the fair's move within the city walls, its opening to the world of video games and role-playing games, and the growing global trend of cosplay, have catapulted Lucca Comics & Games into an unimaginable dimension: the most important Italian exhibition in the sector, first in Europe and second in the world, after Comiket in Tokyo.
If the 1993 edition had 30.000 attendees (considered a real record at the time), the 2017 edition exceeded 240.000 tickets sold.
