Terrazza Petroni, near the San Quirico bridge, is the gateway to the Serchio river park. From here, on foot or by bike, you can cover the 11-kilometer ring which, once you reach the San Pietro bridge, returns to the starting point following the banks on the right side of the river.

The Serchio river park runs through an agricultural area and is an integral part of it. Alongside the road, you will notice the crops of cereals and poplars which, arranged in a regular way, with tall white trunks and their large foliage, create a pleasant backdrop of light and shadows.

The left side, the closest to the city, is the one that offers more possibilities for a break: the skate area, the refreshment of the "tiro della forma", an ancient game of skills in throwing cheese molds, the equestrian centre, the Fattoria degli Albogatti with the urban gardens where you can better get to know the agricultural part of the silk production of Lucca, among mulberries and cocoons. Here is held the river festival every year in September with games, food and concerts.

From the right side, on the other hand, you can easily access the "beach" where you can enjoy, in summer, the fresh water of the river or, in every season, go down in a kayak for long, peaceful stretches, paddling towards the sea.

Every season has its beauty and its colours. In spring it is the fresh green of the first buds of the willows and white poplars and the copper shades of the black poplar that accompany the walk together with the blooming of chicory and mallow. In summer it is the dense foliage of poplar and willow trees that shade the path along the golden yellow fields of wheat and straw. In autumn, the warm colours of the leaves create a romantic atmosphere on the river for the San Frediano celebrations with the ritual blessing. On the hills, the red and yellow hues of just harvested vineyards predominate. In winter the gaze through silvery and bare branches reaches the hills dotted with historic villas and small churches up to the crests of the Apuan Alps.
