Routes through the nature and landscapes of the Lucca area
Brancoleria
Architectural and religious treasures among the hills of Lucca that tell the story of centuries of history and faith.
This picturesque hilly area takes us further north than the Moriano area; rich in history and culture with numerous religious buildings of great historical and artistic value. The Pieve di San Giorgio in Brancoli, consecrated by Pope Alexander II in 1062, is one of the most important buildings in the area. Situated in a scenic location, this parish church dating back to the Romanesque period features an austere architecture and numerous decorations in the three interior naves.
Even more picturesque is the Croce di Brancoli, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, making it an ideal place for charming walks.
Piazza di Brancoli is one of the small outlying districts in this area of the Lucca region: a meeting place for the community and a starting point for exploring the numerous local churches.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its simple façade and decorated interior, is another example of local worship. Not far away, the Church of San Pietro di Ombreglio is distinguished by its ancient historical origins and peaceful atmosphere. The Church of San Lorenzo in Corte is also a small and sober parish church: legend has it that some of the stones used to build it came from other religious buildings.
Examples of the rich panorama of religious buildings, each with its own architectural and historical peculiarities, which contribute to making Brancoli a must-see destination for lovers of history, art and spirituality.
