church of San Frediano in Brancoli

indirizzo: Deccio di Brancoli

There is mention of a first church on this site from 774 and again in 1260. The present church, which is part of the urban fabric of the village, is the result of various reconstructions, remodelling due to liturgical requirements and extensions that have decisively altered its appearance.

The façade, framed by pilasters, ends with a triangular gable.

On the right side of the church, on the opposite side of the small square, rises the massive bell tower.

Built in stone and completed with swallow-tailed battlements, it maintains the characteristics of the bell towers of the Lucca area, i.e. used as a watchtower and defence tower as well as a bell tower. Its ancient bell, housed in the National Museum of Villa Guinigi in Lucca, is said to have belonged to the Longobard castle of Deccio, where a place known as ‘il castellaccio’ still exists.

The one-room interior is divided into five bays, ending with a semicircular apse and two small side chapels.

The floor of the hall and the apse have a classic chessboard pattern. To the left of the main entrance door is the historic marble baptismal font, used for the administration of Baptism
