basement of the ramparts of the walls of Lucca

Built in the Renaissance period, the city walls are today one of the greatest examples of Italian fortification of the time as well as a large public park of 96 hectares of greenery, totally reserved to pedestrians, surrounding the historic center.

The tour allows participants to understand the evolution of military engineering in Italy from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. Visiting the interior part of the ramparts is like entering the "bowels" of the walls of Lucca. The great vaults of the galleries, built with the main purpose of hiding the heavy bronze cannons, are spectacular and breathtaking.
