Lucca Biennale Cartasia 2024

LUCCA BIENNALE CARTASIA

The theme of this edition of the Biennale is ‘Here and Now: Tomorrow’.
50 artists from all over the world
200 works on display
3 months of exhibitions, workshops, meetings, tastings, team building sessions, book presentations, workshops for children, board games.

Lucca Biennale Cartasia, has now become a world reference point when it comes to paper, creativity, art, innovation, design.

Fresh from its inauguration, Palazzo Guinigi is the creative heart of Cartasia, today LuBiCa, and in the coming months it will remain open all the time: here, visitors can admire the works on display, but also follow a book presentation, taste typical products, listen to music, take part in a workshop, a meeting, spend time with a board game. The common thread is, of course, always paper.

Around the city the always surprising monumental works, a widespread exhibition that for twenty years and twelve editions has been guiding visitors to discover the city, offering a different point of view on squares and views of the historic centre. The artists who will create them are arriving in Lucca to create their projects in Palazzo Guinigi and the Mercato del Carmine, another of LuBiCa's ‘places’.

Lucca Biennale is the world's largest event of Art and Architecture in Paper, an instrument of art, design, architecture and creativity.

The Biennial was born in the city of Lucca, the first paper district in Europe. Here paper is the expressive medium that combines the papermaking heritage with the innovation of the artistic avant-garde.

The biennial spreads, develops and researches the relationship between art and territory. Lucca Biennale is a necessary event with strong local roots and an international orientation that questions, with an original look and medium, themes that involve us all.

Tradition, culture, innovation, sustainability: these are the keywords of Lucca Biennale, the world's largest event on paper art, design and architecture. The Biennial animates the city of Lucca during the summer months, creating outdoor and indoor exhibitions, monumental sculptures, architecture, conferences, workshops, and many other events dedicated to the world of paper.

A platform, an opportunity, a place to meet and discover for hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors who flock to the Biennial every year.

An initiative that aims to bring to life and discover the artistic and technological facets of Lucca's papermaking tradition, through a range of events designed for all types of visitors, from art enthusiasts to the curious who want an alternative and culturally rich experience.

Characteristic of each edition is the theme that guides all the events and exhibitions. It is something to reflect on and with which the artists create a link between art and society. The Biennale launches an international competition open to everyone: artists, designers and architects. ‘Here and now: tomorrow’ is the theme that will guide all the events and exhibitions of the 12th Edition of Lucca Biennale, as well as the concepts on which artists, performers, designers and architects are called upon to reflect in order to talk about art and society, through their works.

Lucca Biennale is: art exhibitions, development projects, events, conferences and workshops.

The most innovative and prominent figures of Paper Art animate the Biennale, showing their works in the Outdoor (outdoor), Indoor (indoor) exhibitions, or in the Design & Architecture, Performance, and Fashion sections.

OUTDOOR

One of the most distinctive symbols of the Biennale is the Outdoor section, the beating heart of the event with its monumental cardboard sculptures. The works are realised during a residency in which the chosen artists are hosted for a month in Lucca, each to realise his or her monumental sculpture. The hosted artists meet daily in a workshop where they have the material, equipment and all the support they need to realise their artistic vision. This opportunity allows them to compare the different cultures and technical knowledge of each artist.
At the beginning of the event, the works are placed in the beautiful squares of Lucca, becoming a wonderful attraction for all visitors to the city.

INDOOR

The Indoor exhibition of the Lucca Biennale is one of the main sections dedicated to art together with the Outdoor section. Indoor brings together hundreds of works of art made from paper and cardboard for an exhibition hosted at Palazzo Guinigi. The more than 12,000 square metres of the exhibition allow visitors to discover the contemporary panorama of Paper Art, losing themselves among beautiful sculptures, paintings, performances, design works and much more!
