Thanks to the disposals of key players, Lucchese, not without difficulty, manages to save itself in the 1950-51 season, but relegation is only postponed for a year. And it will be so painful. The “RossoNeri” play a double salvation play-off against Triestina.
It was first in Bergamo where it ends 3-3 in extra time, thanks to a goal at the end by Maestrelli, the future coach of the 1974 Italian Champions, the Lazio football team, then in the repetition of the match in Milan where it defeats the “Alabardati” (Trieste football team) 1-0.
The Serie A dream ends on 6 July 1952. But the worst is yet to come.
The following year Lucchese is last in Serie B and finished in the third series. The fall i never-ending and sweps the “RossoNeri” football away: the following championship also ends in relegation.
In three years the Lucchese goes from the Serie A to the fourth series: a nightmare, seasoned by a rather unstable company situation. Among the players, Scarpato and lucchese Catelli stand out.
The situation is taken over by president Della Santina, who tries to revive the club's fortunes, while the “RossoNeri” wandered on remote provincial football fields.
It is not enough to bring Olivieri back to the bench to climb the league table and it is not even enough to find a young Lucchese striker, Luigi Toschi, who will end up at Sampdoria to find promotion again: Lucchese failes to emerge from anonymity and Della Santina also passes the buck.
Among the fans, discouragement is at its highest level. The Serie C is however found again by table, at the end of a season, the 1957-58, with mediocre results: the Lucchese is however inserted in the third series for sporting merits and the following year maintains the category.
Mario Frezza arrived at the company's guide and gives life to a well-organised team that placed third in the 1959-60 championship, with the coach Zavatti on the bench, and showcases important elements such as Mantovani and Mannucci, both capable of scoring over ten goals.
