The decade begins in the best way for Lucchese, who wins the championship and returnes, after much bitterness, to Serie B.
Zavatti's formation, which has at its disposal some undoubted talents such as Bassetto, Mantovani and Mannucci, who has already made themselves conspicuous in the previous championship, overcomes the fierce competition of the Cagliari football team and resumes the Cadetti, managing to confirm the category in the following year.
In the summer 1962 the couple Frezza-Zavatti left the club and the following championship is an ordeal, also due to the sale of the most representative players.
The “RossoNeri” arrive last and returned sadly to Serie C.
The following years are marked by mediocrity despite the efforts of president Baccelli, who died shortly thereafter.
In May 1966 comes even relegation to D at the end of a championship that is born in a bad way and will finish in a worse one.
Once again, a new painful chapter opens.
It is up to Lino Quilici to try to revive the fortunes of the club, once again plunged into the underworld, but it will take years. Not even the return of Luigi Toschi, who, after having tasted Serie A and Serie B with Sampdoria and Livorno, decides to return to wear the shirt of his heart in Serie D, is enough.
It is only in the 1968-69 championship that Lucchese found Serie C again. And it does so through a dramatic play-off on the neutral ground of Livorno against Sarzanese, able to stand up to the "RossoNeri" for the whole championship: it ends 1-0.
The hero of the day is Albino Cella who signs the winning goal in front of a wall of Lucchesi with tears in their eyes; Giuliano Tagliasacchi seats on the bench, Quilici in the stands. It is a triumph, the redemption after many more years of bitterness.
On the football field, with the Ligurians, playes Corrado Orrico: Lucchese was in his destiny and will return to him years later, with interests, what he had lost on the Livorno football tem on a June afternoon.
