ORATORY OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS

The Oratory of the Guardian Angels, a treasure trove of architecture and painting created in the mid 17th century, is a small Baroque jewel in the heart of the city, hidden behind the sober and almost anonymous façade of the old town, in Via dell'Angelo Custode.

In 1638 Vincenzo Paoli designed the Oratory for the Congregation of the same name.

The nine canvases decorating the interior relatives, entrusted to the brushes of 17th-century Lucchese masters of the calibre of Girolamo Scaglia, Filippo Mannucci and Antonio Franchi, all focus on themes that extol the role of angels as intermediaries with God.

The real protagonist is the pictorial decoration. A complex and fascinating dialogue between painted elements and material decorations that on all surfaces results in an explosion of colours, where the author, Giovan Domenico Lombardi, proposes an illusionistic game between real and painted architecture, involving those who enter in an almost sensorial experience that amazes and stuns.
