The artillery was placed at strategic points on the bastions. The Walls of Lucca were defended by three classes of artillery. The smeriglio, the falcone, the falconetto, the sagro and the quarto cannone colubrinato belonged to the first type.

They fired a ball that could weigh up to 12 lbs. The second class included the culverins weighing about three tons, the half culverins, the cannons, the half cannons and the quarter cannons. The balls weighed more than 12 lbs.

Finally, the petriere, which fired stone balls. Altogether, there were about a hundred pieces, almost all of them produced by the foundry located along the water conduit near what is now Piazza Cittadella.
